There aren’t many people in the world having a better week than Jaime Staples. After winning $150,000 from Bill Perkins on Sunday in a weight loss prop bet, he followed that win up with something he’s more accustomed to winning – a poker tournament.

Staples won the $125 no-limit hold’em win the button tournament in the early hours of Thursday morning. The Canadian poker pro defeated 232 entries and walked away with $5,100.

“It’s been a great one,” said Staples about his last four days. “There’s not much that can top this. I’m super excited.”

Staples is one of the most famous streamers in the poker world and has a huge following on Twitch. Almost all of Twitch’s poker streams come on the virtual felt, but Staples used his cell phone camera to stream the entire live tournament. A feat that Staples thinks is the first of its kind.

“I don’t think this has been done before,” said Staples. “I think this is a first for poker, from a first-person perspective anyway. It’s obviously not going to work at every venue, but here at Run It Up Reno, it’s based around streaming. We are able to stream the events and it’s a lot of fun. It gives a different angle at what playing poker is like.”

Staples’ bet with Perkins forced him to lose over 125 pounds. The new, leaner Staples found that his weight loss journey gave him a newfound sense of confidence in himself and helped him focus more at the table.

It also helped that he is on a more normal diet with the completion of the bet.

“I’ve noticed a little more focus since I’ve not been on a huge calorie deficit,” said Staples. “I’m eating enough calories to feel normal every day right now. And I’m noticing it in my mental abilities. And then, in general, I’m more confident in who I am as a person.”
